The last of Hatch F hatched yesterday. This hatch had 6 goslings hatch unassisted. Yeah!! Four are gray and two are buff. Only one more hatch of four eggs to go!

Six goslings hatched with no assistance. Four were buffs, one a gray saddleback and one a dilute gray. Two more hatches to go, seven in he next and five in the last.
I had 8 fertile eggs in this hatch and 6 hatched. For some reason the membrane dried more in this hatch than previous hatches. The first two hatched without any problems. The next three all had dried membrane on them and they couldn't get out of the eggs. Once they externally pipped, I could see the dried membrane. I waited until I knew they were a day past due and they were still very lively. I finally broke them mostly free of the egg shell and let them do the rest. They had so much dried membrane that I had to clean it off of each one. They are doing great now. The last hatched without any help. The two that didn't pip were fully formed but couldn't break through the membrane. Of course those two were both buffs. So I hatched 4 grays, 1 gray saddleback and 1 buff. Three more hatches to go!
Our first hatch, Hatch B, is complete. We hatched all eight fertile eggs (all seven eggs from Hatch A were infertile). We had one breech hatch that needed only a little help out at the end but all are doing fine. I am keeping one buff from this hatch to grow out since this is the first gosling from this pair.
My one pair that produced several nice goslings for me last year, had 0 fertility this year. I have no idea why, so I won't be getting any goslings from my Grayson and Inge pen. Brule'e and Caramel are doing their usual prolific breeding and I should have several goslings from them this year. Helmut did a good job breeding both Amber and Creme, so I should get a few nice goslings from them. Lance was in with Smidget and Krackers. It looks like he was breeding Krackers, but not Smidget. If any goslings come out gray, then I know he did breed Smidget. So far I have one buff and these are the goslings that I will be growing a few out. Hatch C was started at the same time with Hatch B. These eggs I purchased from a breeder in PA. I started six eggs, four were fertile. All had irregular air cells, I believe due to shipping. Three eggs made it to just before internal pipping and then quit. The last did make it to hatching, but it had not absorbed the yolk sac and died several hours later, even with all the TLC that I gave. It was a buff. I should have hatches on Friday/Saturdays for the next 4 weeks. |
